Lesson Plans and Ideas!

Music evokes feelings and emotions.  We know this because we too use music for various reasons, whether we choose to listen to music to lift our spirits when we are down, to pump ourselves up for excerise, or even the few times we play music to express anger.

The purpose of Edvard Grieg's music was to provide atmosphere to Henrik Ibsen's play, Peer Gynt.  Grieg used his music to aid in telling the story.  "In the Hall of the Mountain King" was merely one piece of a larger story created by Ibsen.  It is this section of music where Peer comes in contact with a very mysterious, viscious world of unknown and must learn a hard lesson of listening and following directions.

Below, I have linked several tools I use in my classroom to combine music and literature as well as discuss music and mood and how this mood can create atmosphere in areas outside of the arts.  You can take this lesson further with older students and have them create their own story and original piece of music to describe their own mood.
